FORCE Drawing in Japan with Michael Mattesi

I had the opportunity to finally meet and work with Michael Mattesi here in Japan a couple of weeks ago.  Michael truly is a great designer and drawing instructor.    The concept of using rhythm is not such a 'new' concept in figure drawing but Michael's idea of force is pushing that to the next step by using it as a design tool to inform your drawings.

Luckily we had very good models to work with who understood Michael's theory and actively applied that to their poses.

I appreciate Michael not just because he is a great and encouraging instructor but he really encourages students to think and make design choices as as they are drawing.

It's easy to fall into a comfort zone once you have figured out a method or formula for drawing.  It's good for your overall growth and learning as a compete artist to be shaken up and challenged every now and then.

Tinkerbell sketch.

A Tinkerbell sketch from the other day.  Some of the best characters are "silent" characters.  Chaplin, Tom and Jerry, Harpo Marx. They emote so clearly though gesture  and they seem to have a more direct connection with the audience in what they are thinking.

Superman Vs. Hulk

Maybe this is how the fight started in the first place.
